You're reading: Ukraine is now second largest International Monetary Fund debtor

Since receiving from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) the first, 1.25-billion-SDR tranche of a new stand-by credit, Ukraine now owes the Fund 8.25 billion SDR ($12.66 billion) and is the world's second largest IMF debtor.

Romania owes the IMF 9.03 billion SDR and Hungary 7.64 billion, the Fund said in a statement.

The newest stand-by program for Ukraine – 10 billion SDR – is the fourth largest among the IMF’s current aid programs behind those going to Greece, Romania, and Hungary.

Similar statistics were released last week by the World Bank. As of June 30, Ukraine at $3.22 billion in debt was behind Poland ($3.81 billion) but ahead of Russia ($2.88 billion). China topped the list at $12.888 billion, followed by Brazil ($11.32 billion), and India, Mexico, and Turkey (from $10.75 billion to $10.19 billion).

Ukraine’s World Bank debt represented roughly 2.7% of all such debt at mid-year.
