Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryschenko delivered a speech at a high-level meeting on revitalizing the work of the conference on disarmament and taking forward multilateral disarmament negotiations as part of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 24, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's information policy department has reported.

Hryschenko noted Ukraine’s outstanding contribution to comprehensive nuclear disarmament, which allows the country to be one of the leaders in this process among all UN member countries. He said that official Kyiv supported the need to draw up and adopt a treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons.

In this regard, Ukraine has already made a decisive step by taking in April 2010 the decision to remove stocks of highly enriched uranium from its territory, as was mentioned in Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s address to the UN General Assembly on September 23, 2010, Hryschenko said.

The minister also stressed the need to unblock the work of the Conference on Disarmament, in particular, adopt the program of its work.
