The toxic red mud that leaked from a Hungarian alumina plant is not likely to enter the Tisza River and the territory of Ukraine, the press service of Ukraine's Emergencies Ministry has reported.

According to the Ukrainian Embassy in Hungary, about 1400 on Monday, 600,000 cubic meters of red mud poured out of a sludge reservoir of an alumina refinery in the Hungarian town of Ajka (400 km from the Ukrainian border) when its concrete walls collapsed.

The toxic sludge flooded seven Hungarian villages situated in the vicinity of the enterprise. Two people were killed, three are missing and 60 people were hospitalized as a result of the accident. Residents of local villages are being evacuated.

In addition, a high-pressure gas pipeline was damaged and rail traffic halted. A state of emergency was declared in the region, the press service of the Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry reported.
