The Organization for Security and Cooperation's (OSCE) in Europe's representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic has said she hopes that the Ukrainian authorities will manage to ensure the development of free speech in Ukraine and guarantee the safety of journalists.

"I hope that Ukraine will not become a country in which it’s dangerous to be a journalist," she said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine in Kyiv on Wednesday.

Mijatovic said that during meetings with senior Ukrainian officials, she had seen "an understanding of the importance of this issue." At the same time, she added that there was a risk that Ukraine would follow the negative path of media freedom development. Mijatovic also expressed her readiness to assist Ukraine in this regard.
