Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said the penalties imposed on drivers for violating traffic rules should be toughened.

“If a driver goes through a red light he should undergo a psychiatric medical examination,” he said at a briefing in Dnipropetrovsk on Tuesday.

The head of state also said the main reason of the traffic accident in Dnipropetrovsk region was the violation of rules for crossing the track by the driver of the bus.

“The speed at which the driver was going is also unknown. Experts will study this,” he said.

Yanukovych has left for the scene of the accident, and is to visit the hospital where the injured from the accident are being treated, as well as hold a meeting of the state commission to determine the amount of state aid to be given to the families of those killed in the accident.
