Today on the day of national mourning for the victims of the bus and train accident yesterday in the town of Marhanets in the Dnipropetrovsk region, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John F. Tefft sent letters of condolences to President Yanukovich and Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Oleksandr Vilkul:

Dear Mr. President:

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic bus and train accident yesterday in the town of Marhanets in the Dnipropetrovsk region. On behalf of the President Obama and the people of the United States of America, I offer our condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and to all the people of Ukraine on this day of mourning.

The loss of so many lives, including children, is a sobering reminder of our shared mortality. All the American and Ukrainian employees of the Embassy of the United States in Ukraine share in your sorrow and join you in the mourning for the innocent victims of this tragedy.
