You're reading: Yanukovych acknowledges criticism of local elections

The Ukrainian authorities have acknowledged the criticisms of the local government elections, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"Of course, we should take into consideration the comments that have been made, while working on the election laws," he said at the first meeting of a working group developing electoral laws in Kyiv on Wednesday.

Yanukovych noted that though amendments were made to the law on local elections, this legislation was imperfect, causing resentment from the public and politicians, and meant the elections were not held in compliance with high political standards.

"We admit this," the head of state said.

The president proposed that members of the working group draw up the election laws and then put them together into a single electoral code.

"We should create such electoral legislation that won’t allow the adoption of election laws in future shortly before elections," he said.

Yanukovych noted that both domestic and foreign scholars and experts, in particular, representatives of the Council of Europe and international non-governmental institutions operating in Ukraine, will be involved in the work on the electoral laws.
