Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister and current Chairman of the Council of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Petro Poroshenko has said that after deciding to declare its non-aligned status, Ukraine has become trapped in the context of its security.

"Ukraine has currently taken a weighted decision on its non-aligned status, which, if there are no security guarantees, traps the country in the context of its security," he said at the fourth Kyiv Security Forum in Kyiv on Thursday, which was organized by Arseniy Yatseniuk’s Open Ukraine Foundation.

Poroshenko also said: "Its [Ukraine’s] geographic location may also be considered as a risk factor. It is situated between the European Union and NATO on the one hand and a rather strong Customs Union and the CSTO on the other."
