You're reading: Experts: Ukraine-EU summit won’t change much

Ukrainian experts have dubbed the Ukraine-EU summit "usual" and said its outcome will not significantly improve Europe's view of the Ukrainian authorities, Oleksandr Sushko, the director of the Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation, said at a press conference on Monday.

"Of course, the Ukrainian authorities will make every effort to present this as a breakthrough diplomatic success, and actually they have the right to do this," the expert said.

Along with this, he said that the euphoria would quickly pass, and then the government itself, as well as experts, journalists, having read the text of the document, would understand how much Ukraine still has to do to gain a visa-free regime with the EU.

Europe itself, according to Sushko, won’t significantly change its attitude to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych after the provision of an action plan on the visa-free regime.

"Currently major conclusions are drawn not as a result of statements in Brussels, but [due to] events inside the country," the expert said, adding that Europe forms its view on the basis of the situation inside Ukraine, and there have been many negative events.
