The Ukrainian Family, Youth and Sports Ministry is planning to introduce next year an electronic register of sporting facilities in Ukraine and draw up a strategy for the development of sporting infrastructure as part of Ukraine's preparations to host the Euro 2012 European Football Championship.

"We will open an electronic register of all sporting facilities in the country… This database [the register] will be introduced approximately on Jan. 1, 2011," First Deputy Family, Youth and Sports Minister Serhiy Hluschenko said at a press conference in Kyiv on Deс. 7.

He said that it was expected that sporting facilities of all forms of ownership would be included in the register and that complete information on each of them would be available. At present, this database includes about 1,000 sports facilities out of more than 100,000 included in official statistics, he added.

Hluschenko said that the Family Ministry would draft a long-term strategy for the development of the country’s sporting infrastructure.

"In 2011, we will have a new strategy for the development of the sector for the next ten years," he said.

The minister said that the strategy would be drafted by concerned research institutions and that international experience in developing sporting infrastructure would be sought.
