All schools in Lviv will close on December 9 for quarantine due to increasing rate of flu and acute respiratory disease among children aged 7-14, the city's chief health officer, Viktoria Nyzhnyk, has said.

"In two days – December 6 and 7 some 3,808 people fell ill in Lviv, including 2,233 children. This exceeds the epidemic threshold by 1.8 times," she said at a press conference on Wednesday.

According to Acting Head of the Department of Education Halyna Slichna, classes in schools have been suspended until further orders from the mayor. There will be no quarantine in kindergartens as the illness rate was lower there.

She forecast that the quarantine would last no longer than until December 20.
