You're reading: Two Ukrainians detained during protests in Minsk

Another Ukrainian citizen was detained during protests in Minsk at the presidential elections in Belarus on December 19, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has told Interfax-Ukraine.

"The Ukrainian Embassy in Belarus learned last evening that another Ukrainian citizen, who was detained on Election Day on December 19, was at a temporary detention center," ministry spokesman Oleksandr Dykusarov said.

The Foreign Ministry reported earlier that a citizen of Ukraine, who attended a rally during the presidential elections in Belarus along with his relatives, had been detained. He was arrested for ten days.

Dykusarov said that Ukraine had not received an official report from Belarus regarding the detention of the second Ukrainian, which contradicts the clauses of the consular convention between Ukraine and Belarus of January 20, 2009. The diplomat said that according to this document, the competent authorities of a host country, as soon as possible, but no later than four days after respective measures were taken, should notify a respective consular officer of another country on the detention, arrest or any other restriction of freedom of a citizen.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Belarus is overseeing the situation and is in constant contact with the detainees and their relatives.
