You're reading: Minsk releases Ukrainian detained for participating in protests

A Ukrainian detained on December 19 during a rally on Independence Square in Minsk, was released at 17:20 on Wednesday, the Ukrain ian Foreign Ministry's spokesman, Oleksandr Dykusarov, told Interfax-Ukraine.

This was possible due to the active work of Ukrainian diplomats in Belarus and the position of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the spokesman said.

"The Foreign Ministry hopes that another Ukrainian will be released soon," Dykusarov said.

Two Ukrainians were detained in Minsk for participation in the Dec. 19 protests against the alleged rigging of that day’s presidential election.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has demanded an immediate release of all Ukrainians detained during protests in Belarus.

Belarusian Ambassador to Ukraine Valentin Velichko was invited to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on Dec. 29 to meet with First Deputy Foreign Minister Ruslan Demchenko, the Foreign Ministry press service told Interfax.

"The Ukrainian diplomat again expressed deep disappointment with the fact that the Ukrainian citizens are still under arrest," the press service reported.

Demchenko reiterated that the Belarusian authorities’ actions contradict the spirit of Ukrainian-Belarusian relations and called for an immediate release of the Ukrainian citizens.
