Ukraine has removed from its territory a large portion of highly enriched uranium in the framework of agreements with the United States, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported.

On Thursday, December 30, a cargo of highly enriched uranium from Kharkiv Physical and Technical Institute was taken by a special flight from Kharkiv to Moscow, head of the Foreign Ministry’s department of information policy Oleh Voloshyn told Interfax-Ukraine.

"Thus, Ukraine is fulfilling its commitments made by President Viktor Yanukovych in the framework of agreements with U.S. President Barack Obama that by the end of 2010 our country will remove most of highly enriched uranium from its territory," Voloshyn said.

He added that in this situation, the president, the government and the diplomatic corpse have demonstrated that Ukraine not only gives its word, but keeps it.

As reported, on April 14, 2010, Yanukovych attended the nuclear security summit in Washington and also met with U.S. President Barack Obama. Yanukovych said after a meeting with Obama that Ukraine was ready to get rid of its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium by 2012.
