You're reading: Kowal: Ukraine needs serious administrative reform

The need for Ukraine to carry out serious administrative reform will be the main subject of the work of the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.

"If Ukraine wants to associate itself with the EU, then serious administrative reform is required. This will be the main subject of our work [this] year," the head of the committee’s delegation, MEP Pawel Kowal, said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

He noted that Ukraine, which is conducting reform in many areas, had "forgotten about self-government."

"Ukrainian politicians are engaged in high politics. Maybe some people think that administrative reform is boring and not interesting, but it is the most important condition for the association with the EU. It is impossible to imagine the entire European integration going through Kyiv. Kyiv alone cannot join the EU," he said.

The MP noted that in this matter the Ukrainian side could "win the strong support of European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, a politician who, while serving as Polish prime minister, conducted very serious administrative reform."
