The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has created the Institute of National Memory as a scientific and research establishment at the Cabinet of Ministers.

This is stipulated in cabinet decree No. 8 of Jan. 12, 2011.

The main tasks of the institute include:
– providing scientific and analytical support for the formation of state policy on the issues of national memory;
– the development within its powers of reasonable recommendations to the government in the sphere of realization of humanitarian policy;
– the holding of state fundamental, scientific and practical studies of problems of national memory of the Ukrainian people, its influence on the formation of a civil society and the Ukrainian nation;
– the carrying out of scientific and practical research into the traditions of the Ukrainian people, its fight for freedom and national unity of Ukraine;
– the study of tragic events in the history of peoples of Ukraine and participation in the events to perpetuate the memory of their victims;
– participation in scientific and educational work and the educational activity linked to the problems of the national memory of Ukrainian people.

The Education, Science, Youth and Sports Ministry, the Finance Ministry, the Social Policy Ministry were ordered within two months to draw up draft proposals on the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory regarding its material, technical and financial support, as well as regarding the overall number of its employees.
