Leader of the Batkivschyna All-Ukrainian Union and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is convinced that the investigation of the case against former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko ended quickly because it was baseless.

"I think we all know that Yura Lutsenko was jailed not because of criminal cases, but due to the fact that he publicly supported me, our political force in the opposition struggle," she told reporters on Thursday before the interrogation at the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Tymoshenko believes the authorities haven’t forgiven Lutsenko for this, and are trying to punish him.

"It’s not surprising that they completed the pre-trial investigation so quickly, because there’s no crime, because there’s nothing to investigate," she said.

According to the ex-premier, there are no fair courts left in Ukraine, so one cannot count on impartial trial.

"So we’ll all be fighting in courts so that Yura Lutsenko is acquitted, but I think the effort by politicians won’t be enough. We are also calling upon the citizens of Ukraine to come and support the Ukrainian opposition, to prevent there being an outright and cynical act of revenge in the courts," she said.

As reported, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said on January 27 that the three criminal cases against Lutsenko were merged into one and the pre-trial investigation had been completed.
