You're reading: Foreign Ministry: Ukraine combating corruption, rather than persecuting opposition

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is conducting explanatory work with representatives of foreign embassies to clarify the situation in the country related to the investigation into criminal cases opened against politicians, Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryschenko has said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that it was expected that Ukraine would take active steps to combat corruption, which the new authorities are attempting to do.

"One tactiv among the opposition forces in Ukraine is trying to describe all investigative actions as politically motivated. We explain that this is not true and give concrete examples," the minister said.

Hryschenko said that Ukraine was conducting hundreds of investigations at various levels and that they concerned both the previous and the current government.

"But not all of those who are monitoring these processes understand the situation correctly," he said.

He noted that the Foreign Ministry wanted Ukraine’s partners to know more about the situation in the country.

"For this goal, the ministry organized a briefing for foreign embassies, where the head of the Control and Revision Office commented on the situation in detail, using figures and [information] on the basis of checks conducted," the minister said.
