Ukrainian prosecutors say they have banned former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko from attending high-profile meetings in Brussels, fearing she might flee the country.

Tymoshenko, who has been charged with abuse of office, had planned to travel to Brussels later this week for a meeting with EU Parliament President Jerzy Buzek and other senior officials.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said Monday Tymoshenko is required to attend investigations this week, and fears she would not return to face justice.

Tymoshenko has been charged with misallocating nearly $300 million while she was prime minister. She has called the probe part of President Viktor Yanukovych’s campaign to silence a political opponent.
