President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek, despite the criticism addressed to Ukrainian authorities, remains committed to Ukraine's European integration.

Alexandre Stutzmann, the Chief Diplomatic Adviser to European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, expressed the president’s position in a phone conversation with Kostiantyn Yeliseyev, the head of Ukraine’s mission to the EU, in Brussels on Saturday morning.

"The European Parliament president continues supporting closer relations between the Ukrainian people and the European Union," he said.

As reported, Buzek on February 4 expressed hope that "Ukraine will turn to the right way."

"Ukraine was the best pupil in the class of the region two years ago. But now it’s not. I am concerned about the worsening of the situation regarding the freedom of speech and mass media. I am anxious about the current trends of using criminal laws to intimidate the opposition politicians. This causes questions about the independence of judicial authorities and the transparency of law supremacy," he said.
