Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has signed a law on sending Ukraine's peacekeeping troops to Ivory Coast to support the UN operation in the country.

As reported, on Feb. 4, 2011, the Verkhovna Rada passed a law approving a National Security and Defense Council decision that was enacted by a presidential decree to send Ukrainian peacekeepers to Ivory Coast.

Under the decree, up to 60 Ukrainian peacekeepers will be sent to support the UN operation in Ivory Coast from the Ukrainian peacekeeping contingent that is operating as part of the UN Mission in Liberia, under the terms defined by the UN Security Council for a period of up to three months.

The expenditure on the participation of Ukraine’s peacekeeping contingent in peacekeeping operations will be financed from Ukraine’s state budget with the further reimbursement of the expenditure by the United Nations. Additional costs from the state budget are not planned.

On January 19, the UN Security Council approved a resolution increasing the peacekeeping contingent in Ivory Coast by 2,000 servicemen. It is planned that peacekeepers will provide security in Ivory Coast until June 30, 2011.
