Liubomyr Huzar, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, has resigned, the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia (Mirror Weekly) newspaper has reported, referring to sources in the church.

According to the publication, Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of the 77-year-old Huzar due to the state of his health.

Huzar has headed the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church since 2001. Despite the title of primate being given for life, Huzar asked the pontiff if he could resign due to problems with health.

As expected, a temporary administrator will be appointed to replace Huzar, and a new head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will be elected at a meeting of the Holy Synod within the next two months.
