You're reading: Ukrainian militia will not become police

Ukraine's Interior Minister Anatoliy Mohyliov has said there is no urgent need to rename militia into police.

"The name – police, militia – from my point of view, is not a pressing issue, there is no sense in talking about it," Mohyliov said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday.

If you change the name of the force, you also change the essence of its work, he said. "Renaming is definitely not a priority," the minister added.

As for the Interior Ministry’s proposals regarding a new militia law, preparations "are practically in the final stage," he said.

Draft documents have been sent to the Verkhovna Rada, the presidential administration and specialists, he said. Expert discussions of the proposals will followed by a public debate.
