You're reading: Lawyer Fomin not ruling out political element in Kuchma case

Lawyer Ihor Fomin has said he does not exclude that the opening of a criminal case against second Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma (1994-2005) was politically motivated.

"A criminal case has been opened against a [former] president of Ukraine. I don’t think that it’s only criminal prosecution, moreover, [as] this happened after so many years," he told reporters in Kyiv on Wednesday.

Fomin said on Wednesday that the Prosecutor General’s Office had issued a resolution denying him the right to defend Kuchma.
