You're reading: Yuschenko denies reports about his alleged involvement in Viacheslav Chornovil’s murder

Third Ukrainian President (2005-2010) Viktor Yuschenko has said he is surprised at reports that he should be questioned in connection with the case on the death of the former leader of the Popular Rukh of Ukraine, Viacheslav Chornovil.

"I find that surprising," he told reporters in Kyiv on April 14 in response to a question from Interfax-Ukraine.

At the same time, the former president said that "if there are any facts," he is ready to discuss them.

Yuschenko also said his relations with Chornovil were "very open and sincere." He added that he saw Chornovil as to the national hero.

He also denied reports that he had allegedly met with former Interior Minister Yuriy Kravchenko, moreover, held talks with him on the possible murder of Chornovil.

"Kravchenko is one of the ministers with whom I never once met," Yuschenko said.

As reported, MP Taras Chornovil said the Prosecutor General’s Office should question Viktor Yuschenko as part of the case on the death of his father, the former leader of the Popular Rukh of Ukraine, Viacheslav Chornovil.

"The first item of a meeting with some national democratic forces in the office of Yuschenko in late 1998 was dedicated to the topic what to do with Chornovil, as they wanted that all democratic forces be united around Viktor Andriyovych [Yuschenko] at the presidential elections in 2004. He had to become the leader, to head everything, but something had to be done with Chornovil for this because he categorically rejected this idea," Chornovil said in an interview with the Gazeta.ua publication.

Viacheslav Chornovil died in a car accident near Kyiv on March 25, 1999, when his car collided with a KamAZ trailer truck that was turning on the road. His driver, Yevhen Pavlov, also died in the accident, while his press secretary was injured.
