Despite the world economic crisis, the Ukrainian government has managed to keep the main economic figures stable and even achieve growth in some spheres thanks to the president's strong policies, which are oriented first of all at social aspects, Regions Party MP Oleksandr Peklushenko has said while commenting on the results of the first quarter.

"The second wave of the financial and economic crisis is spreading around the world, with food and fuel prices growing. This is taking place on the background of the instability of the main reserve currencies – the U.S. dollar and the euro.

And even under such difficult conditions our government in Q1, 2011 managed to secure growth of production and reliable fulfillment of social articles of the budget," the party’s press service cited the MP as saying.

According to him, food prices demonstrate the positive development of the Ukrainian economy: Some of the prices are lower in Ukraine than in the countries of Europe and the CIS.

"In Germany, Italy, France food prices are three times higher, and cost of housing and utilities service is five times higher than in Ukraine," he said and added that the government would not allow food price hikes in 2011.

Peklushenko added that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine is working on a five-year program of improvement of the level of social protection for citizens in need.

"This, for the first time in the years of independence, be a social roadmap, which would allow the proper planning of budget expenditures and mean unrealistic promises are not made. It would give people a guiding line of state support until 2015," he explained.

"Despite the development of some negative economic tendencies, the government has managed to keep stable the key economic directions and achieve growth in some spheres due to the president’s strong policies," Peklushenko said.
