Luhansk, May 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Luhansk Regional Council deputies have approved an appeal to the Ukrainian president, the Cabinet of Ministers and the prosecutor general, demanding that the Svoboda Party be banned in Ukraine as an extremist organization and that the organizers and participants of the riots in Lviv on May 9 be called to account.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that on Wednesday the council’s deputies had watched a video recording of the events in Lviv on the big screen in the session hall during an extraordinary session. Deputy Chairman of Luhansk Regional State Administration Rodion Miroshnyk said that the video recording confirmed the fact of provocation during the celebration of the 66th anniversary of the Victory Day in Lviv.

During the session, the deputies voted against giving the floor to Ihor Shvaiko, the curator of the regional branch of the Svoboda Party.

"I would not mind listening to him, but most deputies decided not to listen to him. The opinion of the majority is the law for the minority. This is democracy," Head of Luhansk Regional Council Valeriy Holenko said.

The deputies also decided to extend in Luhansk region such events as "St. George Ribbon" and "Banner of Victory" until June 22.

The Svoboda Party was registered on the official Web site of the Ukrainian Justice Ministry on October 16, 1995.
