The Kyiv city committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine has said it is indignant at the events of May 9 in Lviv and demands that the Svoboda Party be banned on Ukrainian territory, reads a statement posted on the party's Web site on Thursday.

"We demand that the organizers of the unrest in Lviv be called to account, that the Svoboda Party be banned on Ukrainian territory as an organization supporting national-fascist ideology, and that decisions by regional and district councils banning the raising of the victory flag on May 9 be cancelled," reads the statement.

The communists said that in Lviv veterans "found themselves in the blockade of pro-fascist organizations that spit into the souls of ordinary people and WWII veterans, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, trampling on and burning the red banners of victory, tearing off St. George ribbons, and sneering at the memory of the heroic liberators."

"The Svoboda Party is the main instigator of this disorder," reads the statement.
