Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has been decorated with the Order of Friendship "for significant [his] contribution to developing and strengthening the friendship and cooperation between Russia and Ukraine," the press service of the parliament has reported.

Chairman of the Russian Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly Sergei Mironov on behalf of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev presented the award to Lytvyn at the 36th plenary meeting of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member Nations in Saint Petersburg on Monday.

Lytvyn said that such an award was "evidence and confirmation of the significance of parliaments, which are playing a more and more important role in developing and strengthening cooperation in the post Soviet area."
