You're reading: Regions Party: Recommendations of EU Parliament should be heeded in Ukraine

A resolution by the parliament of another state does not necessarily have to be implemented on Ukrainian soil, but the recommendations of the European Parliament should be heeded, the Regions Party has said.

"Let us agree that we, in fact, live in a free state and that resolutions by other government agencies should not necessarily be implemented by our country, regardless of where they were passed. Therefore, it’s wrong to suggest that we have to implement resolutions by other parliaments," Regions Party faction leader Oleksandr Yefremov said at a briefing on Tuesday, while commenting on the opposition’s demand to implement a European Parliament resolution on Ukraine regarding political persecution in the country.

He added that two weeks ago he had worked with representatives of the European Parliament in Berlin and that he saw evidence of the existence of the polarization of opinions.

"The European Parliament, as well as other parliaments, has different points of view… Therefore, in my opinion, it’s illogical to unambiguously assess any decisions taken in the European Parliament, not paying attention to other issues that were emphasized in this document… Therefore, we will consider this document as a whole and not on the paragraph that can be favorably considered by the person who raised this issue," he said.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the justice system in Ukraine on June 9, mentioning in particular the selective use of the law in the country.
