You're reading: Herman: Freedom House should note that Kyiv corrects its mistakes

Advisor to the President of Ukraine and Head of the Main Department for Humanitarian and Socio-Political Issues of the Presidential Administration Hanna Herman has called on experts of Freedom House to pay more attention to the situation with democracy in Ukraine, as the Ukrainian authorities are working to correct their mistakes.

"I would like to ask for more attention to us… We correct the mistakes we make," she said on Tuesday, at the presentation of Freedom House’s April report on the state of democracy in Ukraine.

Herman noted that Ukraine has opened up access to information to the public, and in addition much has been done to set up "public television."

She stressed that reforms in the country should not be implemented at the expense of democratic processes and infringement of human rights or freedom of the press.

Herman said that she could not agree to all of the conclusions of the report.

She noted that "the current authorities want to take in consideration the opinions of the public, the civil community, and Freedom House."

In turn, Deputy Leader of the Batkivschyna Party Hryhoriy Nemyria said: "Mrs. Herman said they listen [to opinions] and correct [mistakes].

None of the recommendations have been implemented in over two months."

In the April report Freedom House experts pointed at concentration of power among a certain group of people in Ukraine, selective prosecution of political opponents, selective justice, and the increase in the role of the Security Service of Ukraine.

The report also stressed that experts noticed "an unhealthy political situation" in Ukraine.

The study was held in February 2011 under the aegis of Freedom House.

Three experts visited Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Lviv to meet with officials, oppositionists, public organizations, journalists and students.

The experts based their report on the results of the study.
