You're reading: Germany’s state minister concerned over Tymoshenko’s arrest

Germany's Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Werner Hoyer has expresses "a great concern" over the arrest of Ukraine's foreign minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The minister said that the way Tymoshenko was arrested raises serious doubts about the justification for such a move by the Ukrainian authorities, Tymoshenko’s Web site quoted him as saying.

"The Federal Government is greatly concerned by the arrest of Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko. There are doubts as to whether the investigative custody is proportionate. The fact that numerous members of the previous government are being investigated for abuse of office awakens a suspicion of politically motivated justice. If this impression is strengthened further, that would be a significant hurdle to Ukraine moving closer to the European Union," the Web site quoted Hoyer’s statement.
