Peresopnytsia (Rivne region), August 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The possible discussion of the arrest of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko at the level of the heads of various states will by no means influence any Ukrainian court ruling, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said during his visit to the village of Peresopnytsia in Rivne region on Monday.

When asked by Interfax-Ukraine whether Tymoshenko’s arrest will be discussed at a meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and Poland in Gdansk on Tuesday, Yanukovych said: "Our discussion or my discussion with anybody on this issue will not influence the court’s decision. It’s a European norm, the norm of democratic countries where the government should not intervene in the judicial system."

President Yanukovych said once again that the non-intervention of the government in the trials was a position of principle.

Yanukovych said he was confident that a new Criminal Procedure Code would significantly improve the situation in criminal and procedural matters, in particular, balancing the rights of the accused and the accuser.

He said that he planned to meet with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski in Gdansk on Tuesday and discuss relations between Ukraine and the EU, given the current Polish presidency of the European Union.

"We have many issues to talk about. These are the issues of signing an agreement on the creation of a free trade area, drafting the association agreement, liberalizing the visa regime, and preparing for the Eastern Partnership conference," Yanukovych said.

As reported, Yanukovych will make a working visit to Poland on Tuesday, August 30.
