You're reading: Parliament registers bill granting amnesty to Tymoshenko and Lutsenko

A bill to pardon former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, which was submitted by Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense MP Hennadiy Moskal on Sept. 7, has been registered on the official Web site of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament.

"The draft law granting an amnesty to Tymoshenko and Lutsenko was drawn up at [Moskal’s] own initiative with a view to establishing political freedoms and democratic values in Ukraine, improving its international image, and removing obstacles to the integration of Ukraine into the European Union," reads an explanatory note to the document.

The draft law foresees the exemption of Tymoshenko and Lutsenko from criminal liability.

Earlier, Moskal’s press service said that the secretariat of the Verkhovna Rada had refused to register the bill.
