Brussels, Sept 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The European Commission is concerned about the proposal of the prosecutor to sentence former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to seven years in prison and has once again called upon the Ukrainian authorities to respect the rule of law.

This situation will also be discussed at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Warsaw on Sept. 29-30.

"We are very concerned about the prosecutor’s request to the court to sentence Yulia Tymoshenko to seven years of imprisonment. Realizing that the trial will soon be over, we want to emphasize once again that the Ukrainian authorities need to respect the rule of law, [and a ] fair and independent judicial process," Maja Kocijancic, a spokeswoman for High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Catherine Ashtons, said in Brussels on Wednesday.

The European Commission’s representative once again stressed the risk of the selective use of justice.

She urged the Ukrainian authorities to ensure maximum transparency in the investigation, prosecution and trial.

Kocijancic said she also believes that this issue will be discussed at the Eastern Partnership Summit.
