The Higher Council of Justice (HCJ) has terminated the powers of Vasyl Onopenko in connection with the end of his term of office as chairman of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, the Mirror Weekly. Ukraine publication reported on Tuesday.

"The Higher Council of Justice terminated the powers of HCJ member Vasyl Onopenko in connection with the end of his term of office as chairman of the Supreme Court of Ukraine," the council’s chairman, Volodymyr Kolesnichenko, said at a council meeting on Tuesday.

Onopenko’s term of office as head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine ended on Sept. 29, 2011, and the election of the court’s new head will be held by the end of October 2011.

Onopenko was a member of the Higher Council of Justice, because he served as chairman of the Supreme Court of Ukraine.

Now his post remains vacant until a new chairman of the Higher Council of Justice is appointed.

Onopenko was elected head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine at a plenary session on Sept. 29, 2006.

The head of the court is elected for five years. Onopenko earlier declared his intention to run for a second term as head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine.
