Ukraine's third president (2005-2010), Viktor Yushchenko, has confirmed that he has filed a lawsuit against Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense MP Hennadiy Moskal at Kyivsky District Court in Simferopol (Crimea) regarding the protection of his honor, dignity and seeking damages.

"It’s true, because what this man said [regarding my intention to gain U.S. citizenship] does not reflect reality," Yushchenko told journalists in Kyiv on Wednesday.

He also said that he had never planned to live abroad.

"These [accusations] humiliate me. I have never thought about this. My culture, my values and my views prevent me from doing this," Yushchenko said.

He said that lawyers had prepared a motion that has been sent to Kyivsky District Court in Simferopol.

As compensation for moral damage, Yushchenko said he wanted to receive a public apology and Hr 1.

"I know the circumstances of why this person said what he did. I know the circumstances of who asked him to do so, and what materials he was given," Yushchenko said, adding that an opposition party asked Moskal to make such a statement.

On Sept. 20, Moskal said that Yushchenko allegedly planned to obtain U.S. citizenship.

Yushchenko’s spokeswoman Iryna Vannykova described such allegations as absurd and an outright lie.
