Following the European Parliament, the U.S. Congress also has prepared a resolution on the situation in Ukraine, reportedly demanding the release from prison of opposition leaders Yulia Tymoshenko, the former prime minister, and Yuriy Lutsenko, the former interior minister.

The U.S. Congress wants Ukrainian authorities to immediately release all political prisoners, according to the draft resolution quoted by Glavkom. According to the website, the White House and U.S. State Department have endorsed the text.

There is widespread belief in the West that the trial, conviction and seven-year prison sentence given to Tymoshenko on Oct. 11 is unfair.

The ressolution reportedly “demands of the Ukrainian authorities to immediately release all political prisoners, and provide prisoners with adequate medical care.”

The U.S. Congress draft resolution also requires "for Ukraine to adhere to the principles of democracy and the rule of law, respecting human rights and media freedom, and defended the freedom of speech and the right of people peaceably to assemble.”

In late October, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on Ukraine calling the Tymoshenko verdict politically motivated.
