You're reading: Yanukovych: Tymoshenko case could hinder Ukraine’s EU association

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that the situation with former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko could hinder the signing of an association agreement between Ukraine and the EU.

"This issue certainly impedes the question of the ratification of these agreements [the association agreement with the EU] by some countries," he said in Wroclaw on Tuesday.

At the same time, he noted that Ukraine was continuing to work on the political side of this agreement.

Yanukovych said that the government’s intervention in the judicial process was unacceptable.

"And our partners understand this quite well," he said.

Yanukovych recalled that the talks on drafting the association agreement were actually completed on Nov. 11, 2011 and that there remained political issues, including the question of EU membership prospects.

He noted that some time remains before the Ukraine-EU summit in December.

He also said that the ratification of the agreement would depend on the wording of this question.
