U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft has congratulated former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on her birthday, the Batkivschyna Party's press service reported on Friday.

"On behalf of all of us at the U.S. Embassy, please accept my sincere congratulations on the occasion of your birthday. As you know, the United States government has repeatedly expressed its concern about the selective prosecution which has resulted in your incarceration. We hope for your early release," the greeting letter reads.

"We are also concerned about reports of your deteriorating health and hope that the authorities will ensure that you receive proper treatment," the ambassador said.

Tymoshenko will turn 51 on Nov. 27.

On Oct.11, a court sentenced the former prime minister to seven years in prison on abuse of office charges in signing gas contracts with Russia in 2009. An appeal against this decision is to be considered on Dec. 13.
