You're reading: US ambassador not allowed to visit Tymoshenko

U.S. Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon has said he is concerned about the health of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

"We see reports of the health and unsatisfactory nature of the medical care that she gets, and we have no way to independently verify this, which is a problem," he told journalists in Kyiv on Monday.

Gordon said that U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft wanted to see Tymoshenko in the Kachanivska penal colony in Kharkiv, but "he was not allowed to do so."

He also said that he did not plan to visit Tymoshenko in the colony because there was not enough time on his visit to Ukraine.
