Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has admitted that the trial of former Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko and other former officials fall short of European standards.

"From what Europeans say, I agree with the fact that Ukraine’s legislation is imperfect and that the trial of Tymoshenko and others didn’t meet European standards and principles. I absolutely agree with this," he said in an interview with three Ukrainian TV channels on Friday, while commenting on European officials’ demands to allow Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

According to Yanukovych, Tymoshenko has made a mistake by choosing political and not legal plane for building up her defense.
