You're reading: Pifer: US to impose sanctions against Ukraine should backslide on democracy continue

Should the backslide on democracy continue in Ukraine, the US will apply sanctions against the state, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer said during a meeting of a media club in Kyiv on Wednesday, June 6.

The former ambassador also said that both Republicans and Democrats in the US share the same position as regards Ukraine.

According to him, there have been no significant differences between Republicans and Democrats about Ukraine over the past ten years.

Pifer said a draft resolution on Ukraine had been submitted to the US Congress by a Republican. And though, members of the Congress didn’t support the draft, none of them dared to speak against this document, the ex-ambassador added.

The US official believes that there is no difference in the foreign policy of the U.S. and the EU towards Ukraine.

The first ambassador of the independent Ukraine to the US, Roman Popadiuk, agreed with Pifer. "There is no difference between the US and the EU’s foreign policy toward Ukraine," he said.

However, the talks about the draft resolution on Ukraine started in the US Congress about five or six months ago, Popadiuk said.
