You're reading: Poll: Yanukovych leads with 28.5 percent

Former prime minister Viktor Yanukovych, today leader of the opposition Party of Regions, will win the largest single proportion of votes in Ukraine's January 17 presidential election while incumbent Viktor Yuschenko can only expect negligible results, an opinion poll suggests.

Yanukovych would have received 28.5% of the vote if the election had been held on December 20 while Yuschenko would have mustered a mere 3.5%, according to the returns of a December 17-22 survey by political sociology company FOM-Ukraine released at a news conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Monday.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who is also running, would have won 14.4% of votes.

Sergiy Tigipko’s result would have been 6%. The same proportion of votes would have been cast for Arseniy Yatseniuk, FOM-Ukraine Director Oleksandr Bukhalov said.

Communist leader Petro Symonenko would have drummed up 4.8%, while parliament chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn would have ended up with 3.2%.

According to the survey returns, 15.6% of Ukrainians are undecided, another 5.9% are not going to vote, while 8.5% will vote against all candidates.

FOM-Ukraine questioned 1,000 people in 85 cities, towns and villages.

It said there was a margin of error of 3.2%.
