Candidate for the Ukrainian presidency and Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said he is confident that the head of state has enough powers to work for the sake of the people.

"For a president to be a president, he should know and listen to the people, and his policies should reflect the moods of the people," the politician’s press service quoted him as saying at a meeting with the workers of Chernihiv region on Wednesday.

"The president should be a guarantor of stability, a referee of the nation, the guarantor of the constitution, and he should ensure that policies are predictable and the country is united. To do so, he needs one power that depends on him – he should rely on support from the majority of people. Our [president] usually relies on a minority of people and tries to impose the minority’s view on the whole country. That’s why, our country is being shaken," Lytvyn said.

"I want to set an example that [former] Polish President [Alexander] Kwasniewski did, with far less powers than the incumbent Ukrainian president. The average salary in Poland is currently EUR 1,200, while we have an average salary less than UAH 2,000. So the problem lies in morality and professionalism, rather than in powers," he said.
