A close ally of Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said she had inched ahead of her rival, Victor Yanukovych, in Sunday's presidential election, according to a count made by her officials in polling stations.

First Deputy Prime Minister Oleksander Turchynov said Tymoshenko's officials, who together with Yanukovych's team must sign off results, had counted 85 percent of the vote, giving her 46.8 percent of the vote and Yanukovych 46.0 percent.

Official results from the Central Election Commission put Yanukovych in the lead with 52.17 percent and Tymoshenko with 42.60 percent with just over 11 percent of the vote counted.
