Advisor of Ukraine's prime minister and former reporter of the PACE Monitoring Committee Hanne Severinsen has said that the possible win of Victor Yanukovych at the presidential election of Ukraine was due to the political conflict between current President Victor Yuschenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

At the same time, Yanukovych will not bring Ukraine closer to Russia, she told the Ukrainian service of the BBC in a phone interview.

Severinsen said the European Union should cooperate with Yanukovych, as the majority of the population of the country see the future of the country as part of the EU.

"I think that the European Union should try to cooperate and must try to bring Ukraine closer to the West. I'm sure that the majority of Ukrainians want to join the EU," Severinsen added.
