You're reading: Parliament speaker could announce coalition dissolution next plenary week

Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn has said he will announce the dissolution of the current coalition next plenary week if its activity is not confirmed in documents.

"It’s clear that if the necessary formalities are not observed, then it will be necessary to say next plenary week that the coalition does not exist," he said in an interview with the parliament’s Rada television channel on Friday evening.

Lytvyn said that he was not interested in whether or not coalition factions were collecting signatures to confirm the coalition’s existence.

"I’m not interested in whether they’re collecting [signatures] or not. I can say only one thing that various talks are being held. There are various options for the formation of a [new] coalition," he said.

Lytvyn said that it was possible to ensure "the effectiveness of the current coalition" or create a new coalition in parliament.

As reported, Lytvyn on February 17 asked the current coalition to provide within ten days documents that confirm its existence, in particular, a list of at least 226 MPs who are members.

The Verkhovna Rada includes five factions – the Regions Party (172 MPs), the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko (153), the Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense Bloc (71), the Communist Party of Ukraine (27), and the Bloc of Lytvyn (20). Six deputies do not represent any factions.

The current coalition consists of three factions – the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko, the Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense Bloc, and the Bloc of Lytvyn.
