Lytvyn: Local elections could be held in autumn 2010, but constitution must be amended before this
Mar 9, 2010 at 12:32 | Interfax-Ukraine"I ordered the creation of a working group which will study the issue of changing the terms of office of mayors and council deputies, because the difference totals only one year, as far as you know. The second issue is the elaboration of a law on elections in line with a civilized electoral system. And finally, the third issue is establishing a date [of local] elections. I think they should be held in autumn 2010," the speaker said at a briefing on Tuesday.
Lytvyn said that is was absolutely essential to amend the country's legislation.
"Primarily this concerns the amendments to the constitution. This could be, and should be done at the beginning of the autumn session, early in September. As a result, we will get the chance to hold these elections in 2010. I think this has to be done," he said.
