The Ukrainian parliament has appointed Dmytro Tabachnyk as science and education minister.

MPs voted for such a decision at a meeting on Thursday.

Tabachnyk was born in Kyiv on November 26, 1963. In 1986, he graduated from the historical faculty of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko State University. He is a doctor of historical science, professor, and current member of the Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine.

He has been an MP of several convocations. In March 1998 through March 2003, he was an MP and chairman of the Verkhovna Rada's committee for foreign affairs. In November 2002 through February 2005, he served as vice premier in the Cabinet of Ministers led by then Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.

In March 2006, he was elected deputy on the Crimean Supreme Council from the For Yanukovych! Bloc.

April 2006 through December 2007, Tabachnyk was a vice premier in the government led by Yanukovych.

He became a Regions Party MP in fresh parliamentary elections in September 2007.
